The procedure is performed for an external snapping hip. The IT band is vastus lateralis fascia are visualized. A cruciform cut is made in the IT band to release the longitudinal fibers. Care is taken to cut sufficiently posteriorly to address all of the longitudinal fibers of the IT band. The cut is discontinued where the gluteus maximus muscle fiber insertion begins. The incision is then extended across the gluteus maximus tendinous insertion.
